Scholarship Foundation

Courage Strength Character

From the very beginning of the union of Aaron Cotton and Cliffie Mae Williams they began to create a family built on three bedrock principles: courage of convictions, strength of character, and a strong appreciation of education. These principles are still highly valued by every one of their children. Presently, their children have found that these principles have served then well in life. It is the desire of the Aaron and Cliffie Cotton’s children to pass those values along not just to their offspring but to the community at large. The creation of the “Aaron and Cliffie Mae Cotton Scholarship Foundation” is designed to help perpetuate those principles in the community.

The Cotton Family Story

The story of the Cotton Family begins with the patriarch Aaron Cotton and the Matriarch Cliffie Mae Cotton joining in holy matrimony to create this wonderful family. Our patriarch displayed great courage and innovation when he, a black man, decided to start a taxi service in the segregated south from the ground up. That same taxi service became known as one of the best taxi companies in the Metro Birmingham area for almost 50 years. The matriarch put on full display her strength by raising seven children and taking in people for refuge. Though, neither had an opportunity to attend college themselves, but the time to educated themselves. They both possessed a fierce thirst for knowledge. They both emphasized to their children the importance of education and encouraged a love of reading.
